Satish Shah, beloved ‘Sarabhai vs Sarabhai’ star, passes away at age 74

Veteran actor Satish Shah, a beloved figure in Indian comedy and character acting, passed away on 25 October 2025 in Mumbai at the age of 74.  His death was attributed to kidney failure, following a period of illness during which he had reportedly undergone a kidney transplant and was receiving treatment for renal complications.

A Life of Laughter and Versatility

Satish Shah’s career spanned over four decades, during which he carved a niche for himself as one of Indian cinema and television’s most memorable comedic actors. Born on 25 June 1951, he was a FTII-trained performer whose early work included appearances in films like Arvind Desai Ki Ajeeb Dastaan (1978) and Gaman (1979).

On the silver screen, he became widely known for his roles in cult classics such as Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983), and later in mainstream hits like Main Hoon Na (2004) and Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003).

However, it was television that firmly anchored his place in the hearts of viewers. His portrayal of the eccentric yet endearing Indravadan Sarabhai in the sitcom Sarabhai vs Sarabhai made him a household name and an icon of Indian comedy. His impeccable timing, expressive face, and effortless transition between ludicrous and subtle humour defined his signature style.

Final Days & Passing

On the afternoon of 25 October 2025, Satish Shah was rushed from his Bandra residence to the P.D. Hinduja Hospital after being found unresponsive. Despite immediate medical attention and CPR reported by hospital sources, he could not be revived. Statements from his manager and close associates revealed he had been dealing with kidney-related health issues for months and had undergone a transplant.

His funeral, held on 26 October, saw an outpouring of grief from the entertainment industry. Colleagues, co-stars, and fans from across generations gathered at the Pawan Hans Crematorium in Vile Parle, Mumbai, to pay their respects.

Legacy & Impact

Satish Shah’s contribution to Indian entertainment goes beyond the laughter he generated. He consistently proved that a character actor could elevate every scene they were in, no matter how small. In a 2025 interview, he spoke about navigating his career with humility and a focus on craft rather than stardom, qualities that made him beloved.

His performance in Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, now considered a cult classic, continues to resonate with new audiences, long after its initial run. His ability to switch between roles, genres, and mediums made him an invaluable asset to both film and television.

Satish Shah leaves behind a legacy of joy, warmth, and consummate professionalism. For countless viewers, he wasn’t just the comedian or the character actor — he was the man who made rooms brighter, screens funnier, and comedy more intelligent. He will be sorely missed.
